Learning medical terminology is hard. It’s been accumulating for millennia, so there’s loads of terms to learn. Many are derived from ancient languages like Latin and Greek, and some are long, complicated, and intimidating.

Why is this a problem? Well, medical terminology is what enables different healthcare professionals to communicate accurately and specifically about your health.

It matters.

Using our combined experience and expertise, we’ve created MediLingo, a better way to learn medical terminology.

Nic, the practitioner; Taryn, our linguist; and Jon, our technologist.

MediLingo is an evidence-based mobile learning application designed specifically for medical terminology. We’ve incorporated language learning strategies, as well as insights from our early adopters, which have included first year nursing students to create a learning platform which helps our users to read, pronounce, spell, and recall the meaning of medical terms.

Users can complete lessons, work through quiz questions, practice with flashcards, listen to audio pronunciations, or search the medical dictionary from any internet connected device. smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop.

Some of our students have even dubbed MediLingo as the Duolingo for medical terminology.

Medical terminology can be considered a language in its own right. However, tutors in higher education institutions have limited time allocated in the curriculum to teach medical terms.

Our team’s multidisciplinary skill set positions us as the ideal founders of MediLingo, the app that helps users learn medical terminology like a language.

MediLingo is an innovative tool incorporating several language learning techniques to help users master medical terms at their own pace and is an accessible tool that can be used in university study or clinical practice.

The findings indicate that students perceived clear value in learning medical terminology like a language using MediLingo and identified the relevance of this learning to their clinical practice. MediLingo employed a technique known as spaced repetition, a practice commonly used in language learning as a key approach to conveying medical terminology. The results suggest that students saw benefit in the opportunity to repeat the learning of the terms and word parts. MediLingo also provided participants the chance to learn while ‘on the go’ in clinical placement, in university, at home, and even while travelling, which again was evidently valued.
